misties2003 asked:

and the electric (electrolysis) produced by coal/oil/nuclear/etc why not just have electric cars with a nice clean electric motor.
Batteries could be swapped at petrol stations so no need to wait.
Electricity also comes from solar.
I think industry is tooled up for the internal combustion engine petrol or hydrogen and are unwilling to change

Tavish Tavish asked:

What will the car firms go with?
Hydrogen cells that produce energy when it is filled with oxygen and hydrogen or electricity powered straight into a cars battery from a charger.

Hydrogen is looking like the preferred choice right now but battery technology is getting much better supposedly.

Thank you.

Why do people think that electric cars will reduce air pollution?

Phil asked:

If we’re talking about conventional electric cars that have to be plugged in, you have to consider how that electricity is being generated. The majority of power plants in this country are COAL-POWERED. If we all had electric cars, we wouldn’t have any exhaust coming out of the cars, but there would be a lot more coal being burned to generate the electricity to charge the cars’ batteries. So how does that reduce pollution?

Just wondering what is going to happen when the cars are old and the batteries are dead. Is this a potential harm to the environment?

doug02346 asked:

I read in an old Wired Magazine that California is gearing up to create an infrastructure to allow cars that run on hydrogen to run on the road and have “filling stations” along the highway that runs north to south. How does the process of making energy from water for these cars work?

What would be the c limate effects of a complete conversion to hydrogen powered cars?

loudwalker asked:

I want to know if anyone has modeled this scenario. And please educate me if I have some fundamental misunderstandings about any of this. But less just say that tomorrow, all cars suddenly were converted to hydrogen powered cars emitting nothing but water as exhaust. What would the climatological effects be of introducing all that water into the atmosphere? My gut tells me that there would be fairly significant effects related to weather, water levels, ozone, whatever.

I have asked this question before and been called a left wing, environmentalist cook. I have no political agenda in asking this. I just want a thoughtful answer and some references to facts and data related to this topic.

curious george asked:

I’m sure you all know by now that cars are responsible for global warming. However, I’m aware that the earth has had a history of ice ages as well as a little ice age around 400 years ago. I was wondering how did the earth get warmed up after each ice age without any cars?

Lizzy K asked:

What car is good for converting to an electric car?
I’m interested in a car that is lightweight, has a manual transmission, and has room for batteries. I’m trying to convert a gas car to an electric car, and I need one that is light, has manual transmission, room for batteries, etc, etc. Has anyone done that and has advice/know a good car for it? I have a limited price range, and I need a relatively cheap car for it. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Why does the US drag its feet with boosting diesel fuel refinement?

CJB asked:

From what I have read, if 50% of the cars on the road used diesel fuel, the USA would be free from their dependency on foreign oil. If this is true, why in the hell are we wasting time with hybrids and such if clean diesel burns cleaner, and offers better mileage than conventional petrol? Is this just another case of corruption down the entire ladder?

JustHelping asked:

I am looking to buy a car that runs off of biodiesel and ethanol, but I’m having problems finding what cars are out there. I want them made this year and not personally converted, manufactured that way. Can anyone give me a list of what manufactured cars run off of one or the other alternative fuel listed?
